Batteries and winterconditions

It's cold.
Frost, snow and sometimes strong wind. No reason not to cycle, but at these low temperatures you have to handle your e-bike a little differently than normal.
In the past few days we have seen several people who have problems with their battery, or experienced problems when charging the battery.
That is why a message about what cold does to your bicycle battery.

It is better not to charge a bicycle battery below 0C (and above 45C). Cold makes it harder for your battery to charge.
It is more difficult for electrons to flow from one contact to the other. Older bicycle batteries often suffer (more) from this.
The ideal temperature to charge your bicycle battery is between 10 and 20C. The software in some bicycle batteries even prevents the battery from being
charged if it is too cold (temperature <5C), or too warm. You can usually store your bicycle battery in the shed or garage in the winter, provided that the mercury does not creep towards zero degrees or below.
The cold ensures that self-discharge occurs less quickly, heat accelerates the process. Self-discharge means that the battery slowly loses its power, this also happens
when you are not using the battery, so it is advisable to charge the battery once a month - even if it is not being used. It is better to avoid temperatures below freezing, also because of the chance of condensation. So remove your battery from your e-bike at low temperatures.
If this is not possible, put the bike in a warmer place.
The capacity of a bicycle battery decreases during use when the temperature drops. For example, when it freezes 5C, the capacity of your battery is approximately 90%.
In addition, the energy requirement may be greater (the battery has to work harder) than when the weather is good. It is not difficult to imagine that it costs more energy when it is windy and freezing, than when the sun is shining and there is no wind. If you are going out in cold temperatures, make sure that your battery is at room temperature before you leave. By using a (neoprene) protective cover for your battery, you ensure that the battery cools down less quickly due to cold and wind. What can you do yourself against the cold? If you are on your bike when it is freezing, there is actually not much to worry about. Keep in mind that the capacity of your battery may be less. You can choose to take your battery inside with you when you go somewhere. Store and charge your battery in a space above zero degrees (preferably above 5 degrees).
If it is too cold in your shed, garage or outside, it is best to take your bicycle battery inside and charge it there. Let the battery warm up first (at least half an hour), then connect the charger.
